A few days ago I posted a question asking why so many parents are neglecting their childrens teeth. After reading the last answer from a woman who I obviously offended, I felt compelled to respond on the behalf of all dental professionals from dentists down to assistants. We are not all money hungry. Dental supplies are expensive as well as the overhead costs in a dental office. You want everything sterile dont you???? You want well trained staff??? Well this is not free!! Dentists have bills to pay, including salaries.Dental assistants and hygientist deserve to be paid well for their knowledge of the field.So yes, we expect to be paid up front for dental services If we dont, some people will have the work done and never finish paying for it.There are dental financing programs out there.(Care Credit).Stop making excuses for your kids decay.Some are caused by health problems, but I can tell you one thing for sure, none were caused by your dentist!!! Sugar and sugar alone causes decay!
Why are parents blaming dentists for their childrens dental problems?
Its not so much the dentists fault as it is the parents....What I mean by this is that as parents, we have to make sure our children brush their teeth regularly, watch their sugar intake and take them to visit the dentist as they are supposed to. If we neglect our childrens teeth, we have to ask ourselves,--what else are we neglecting??

I for one have NEVER blamed my children's teeth issues on their dentist.

Reply:As a mother of 2 I totally agree with you , Im constantly telling them dont chew on that, get it out of your mouth, dont eat that before bed. I do as much as I can and I am always saying brush your teeth, they see me brush mine all the time. BUT I cannot afford the dentist even though i work full time and pay for ins. LUCKILY for me I do get state help with medical card THank God!@

Reply:I dont think it's neglect as much as it is mis education my children have had cavities and my two year old is currently awaiting sedation to fix his teeth(got damn sippy cup)who would have thunk ,I dont have candy in the house but all the juices they sell are worse than candy I never knew ,I thought juice was healthier for them so it's now water,water,water, I also never knew that small children should floss or be flosse I'm a very cautious mom and belive me when I took them for there 6 month check up I felt like a monster for there teeth not being as healthly as I thought (cavaties in between teeth never saw them)...I now am so freaking scared of my son's work(getting sedated and all) and cant wait for it to be over ...But I have to comend my dentist for the education lesson he gave me on my children teeth for the future. You see as a child I never once went to a dentist so this was all new to me and I only had one cavity at 30years old,with all the other stuff parents are taught I belive a dental hygeine class is one that would benefit us all not to metion save us a butt load of money and emotional distress watching our kids have work done at an early age....Thank You for bringing this very important subject out in the open....

Are dental schools a good place for extracions?
I have a bad tooth ache, and maybe a abcess, I am curently out of work and am looking into going to the west valley (glendale) dental school in arizona to get it pulled or posibly filled depending on the cost/availability is it a good idea? and how much might it cost, my father recently had a tooth pulled, no insurance or anything and the regualr dental office charged 350$ I just cant afford that right now, but I cant live with the pain anymore either.

Yes it will be ok as there will be an oral surgeon there in case of a problem that the student can't handle!! Doc W

Question about dental work.?
I got a partial and it looks terrible. I ended up breaking a tooth off and was sent to another dental office to get it fixed. The people at this office also told me it looks terrible and it would look much better if I got my canine tooth pulled even though most dentist dont like to pull this particular tooth. I told my dentist this is what I want after all whats another tooth since i already have the partial. he refuses to pull the tooth but assures me he will do the work until im happy with it even if i end up needing a completely new partial. my question is will i be charged again for another partial even though i expreseed my dislike. is he just trying to get more money out of me? any ideas on what i should do? I signed a contract with him so they wont let me switched dentist even though its the same practice plus ive used up all of my insurance with this. thanks for any input.
Question about dental work.?
It sounds like the Dentist wants to help you until you are satisfied. If the first Partial dosent fit right they will do what they can till it does. If not they should give you a new partial at no charge. One other thing was this an immediate partial or the permanant one. If it was the immediate they took a guess at how it would fit until the permanant one is made.

The partial can hook on to the canine a lot better with more support than the lateral. It might be too much for the lateral and eventually you might have to get it taken out. There is no harm in seeing what it looks like redone with pulling that other tooth. He probably sends them out to a lab and the lab did not do a good job. Talk to him and make sure it is at no fee. Then, it you still don't like it, get another opinion from a dental office. (that you haven't been to)

UIC specifically (http://dentistry.uic.edu/) has a clinic with many specialties including oral surgery, a temporomandibular joint clinic, endodontics, periodontics, etc. They have a screening clinic (where you go first to be seen and make an appointment), a regular clinic (after you have an appointment) and an urgent care clinic.
Loyola (http://www.luhs.org/programs/oralhealth.... also has many departments including oral surgery and orthodontics.
In my experience, the waits at university dental clinics can be long at times, so be prepared. However, the work that was done for me was much cheaper and was the same quality that a regular dentist would do. Also, I found that in general, I got along with the dentists great since they were so eager to help and practice their skills, which made me more comfortable with being at the dentist's. Another good thing about being at a university clinic is that they are aware of the newest research (and are often the ones completing it!), so your care is always the most up to date possible.

What are the biggest dental rip-offs?
The office manager at my dentist tried to write a recommended dental rinse for $45 and a 3 month cleaning for $95 (neither are covered by my insurance) in the necessary procedures section of my charge form. In my opinion, that's a recommendation, not a requirement, right? What other items has your dental office tried to hard sell you on?
What are the biggest dental rip-offs?
they drugged me up and gave me an electrical toothbrush that ended up costing me $130. they lied and said it was for my wisdom teeth extraction. smilecare are a bunch of bastards. stay away.

People like you think you have the inside scoop on everything and thus nobody can pull the wool over your eyes. Hence, anything that doesn't make immediate sense to you (based on your perceived knowledge about all topics--including dental medicine) is viewed by you as an attempted rip-off.
Do you know how much money we make by performing routine work (e.g. fillings, root canals, crown/bridge, dentures, extractions, etc.?) We make a hell of a lot of money. We dentists make so much money, we're notorious for it. When people think of the word "dentist", they think of a guy who works 4 days a week and makes more money than he deserves.
So why in the universe do you think we need to sell you a $45 bottle of Peridex (or whatever rinse it was) and scaling/root planing if you didn't actually need these things?
That's probably why your mouth is such a filthy sewer that it requires 3-month check-ups and antimicrobial mouth rinses: your infinte knowledge about dentistry tells you that brushing alone is adequate, and that a doctor recommending dental work other than basic fillings is trying to sell you something as unnecessary as vinyl siding for your house.
Reply:Try FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS just to have a single tooth pulled out. And have it pulled under only one shot of local anesthetic just because the department of public aid refuses to pay the steep cost (p.a. actually said dentists DO overcharge). Try having what's called 'soft teeth' that crumble away no matter what you do, no matter how careful or how meticulous you are about brushing, and letting dentists tell you they absolutely refuse to help you except to happily rip them all out, and then tell you oh sorry, I won't even help you with the dentures because your insurance doesn't cover it, and because you can't afford it on your own. Money first, help later. So, you who responded just before me, I have investigated my insurance, my dentist, even itemized my bills.. guess what?
