in the dental office they'll cut you up a little. in the oral and maxillofacial surgery they'l cut you up a lot. that's all.
Reply:A lot of dentist are equip with dealing with wisdom teeth in the office. If the impacted teeth are really deep then the dentist can always send you to a specialist for same-day surgery where you go home but it's done in a surgical center.

I have teeth taken out that were impacted at a military hospital in the 70s and at that time I had to be admitted to the hospital for two days. Times surely have changed!

If you don't feel comfortable with the skills of your dentist then by all means go to a oral surgeon.
Reply:Maxilliofacial surgery is done in severe cases of impacted wisdom's, but can be done in the chair if they are exposed. Both my top wisdom's were normal chair removal, both bottom are impacted. One exposed which can be removed in the chair because the molar next to it has been removed, the other is going to require surgical removal due to access.
Reply:An oral surgeon will put you to sleep to remove the wisdom teeth. An oral surgeon usually does what a dentist can't do. I had to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed and the hygenist said I would have to go to an oral surgeon because they were so impacted that the dentist wouldn't be able to remove them. I was put to sleep, he removed the teeth and gave me stitches in my bottom gums. So, I guess it's how severely they are impacted as to whether the dentist will do it or if you need to go to an oral surgeon.
