do I politely ask for a male dentist without freaking out somebody?
My new Dental office has 5 dentists, one woman. I drew her. How?
No need to make it an issue of a "male" dentist vs. a "female" dentist. When you call to make the appointment, simply tell them that you were unsatisfied with your last visit with Dr. "Such and Such" and ask if you can be seen by someone else in the office. If they ask for a reason why you'd like to see another dentist, explain it as you have here, that you felt that she was pushing you toward more expensive procedures that you're not able to have performed, to a degree that made you feel uncomfortable. And if they're unwilling to make this concession for you, then perhaps you need to find another office entirely - one that will take your needs into better consideration.
Reply:How? I don't know. Does it really matter? It's your teeth, not your genitals. If it really bothers you that much, tell them the truth, that you're uncomfortable with a female doctor. You may not get your wish, but it's worth a try.
Reply:Are you planning to date her or is she just going to fix your teeth? Obviously she is fully qualified, or she would not be in the partnership. Are you nervous about having a woman do anything important? Trust me, some of the best dentists (doctors and surgeons as well) are women. Why not give her the benefit of the doubt and go through your initial session with her. If you aren't happy after that, you will have something definite to base your decision on, but at the moment, you just sound sexist.
Reply:Your teeth, your comfort level, your money - nobody should get freaked out.
Instead of saying "I'd like to see a male dentist" say "I was hoping I could see ......................(name of one of the male dentists)".
Make out it has to do with their expertise not their gender.
